Cancer Research UK is the largest independent funder of cancer research in the world. It funds scientists, doctors and nurses working to beat cancer sooner, provides cancer information to the public, and develops evidence-based policy to inform government decisions on cancer and research.
It relies on public support. In the charity’s own words, every step towards beating cancer relies on every pound donated.
Research progress is slow, expensive and cumulative — it happens because people give steadily over decades rather than occasionally. The results are real and measurable.
Behind figures like those are treatments that did not exist a generation ago. Modern radiotherapy means people who would once have been unsuitable for curative treatment now receive it. Targeted drugs mean cancers that were once treated identically are now treated according to their biology. Earlier detection means more cancers are caught while they are still treatable.
