Cars that reach 200,000 miles are rarely lucky. They have almost always had the same few things done properly and on time, by owners who dealt with small problems before they became large ones.
Oil changes matter more than anything else
If you do one thing, do this. Modern engines run tighter tolerances, higher temperatures and smaller oil capacities than engines of twenty years ago, and turbochargers are lubricated by the same oil. Degraded oil is the most common root cause of expensive engine and turbo failure.
Manufacturer intervals are often set with fleet running costs in mind rather than engine longevity. Many long-life schedules stretch to 20,000 miles or two years. Halving that is one of the cheapest things you can do for a car you intend to keep.
Missed or late servicing is one of the most common reasons a warranty claim is rejected — by any provider. Keep the receipts and the stamps. A full service history protects the car and protects your claim.
Deal with small faults immediately
Nearly every catastrophic failure has a cheap early warning. A slight coolant loss becomes a warped head. A faint whine becomes a failed bearing. A misfire ignored for a month destroys a catalytic converter. The repair is almost always an order of magnitude cheaper if you act in the first week.
Cambelts are not optional
On an interference engine, a snapped cambelt destroys the engine. A belt and water pump might cost £400–£800. A replacement engine is several thousand. Belts have both a mileage and a time interval, and the time one catches out low-mileage owners constantly — rubber ages whether you drive or not.
Worth knowing: cambelt replacement is servicing, so no warranty covers it. But the engine damage from a belt that failed early can be covered, whereas damage from a belt you never changed will not be.
How you drive the first five minutes
Most engine wear happens before the oil is warm. Hard acceleration on a cold engine, and short journeys where it never warms through, do more damage than motorway miles ever will. A car with 150,000 gentle motorway miles is often in better condition than one with 60,000 miles of two-mile school runs.
Diesels suffer particularly. A DPF needs sustained higher-speed running to regenerate. Used only for short trips, it blocks — and that is a bill running into four figures.
What genuinely helps
- Oil and filter at half the manufacturer’s interval
- Cambelt on time, by date as well as mileage
- Coolant and brake fluid changed on schedule — both degrade and both cause expensive damage
- Tyre pressures monthly
- Fix small faults in the first week
- Let the engine warm before working it hard
- A long run occasionally, particularly with a diesel
What does not
- Engine flushes and additives — a clean engine does not need them; a dirty one needs a mechanic
- Premium fuel in an engine not designed for it
- Warming up on the driveway — modern engines warm faster under gentle load
- Over-servicing beyond oil, filters and fluids
Where reliability stops being in your control
You can do all of this and still be handed a failed gearbox at 90,000 miles. Some components fail for reasons no owner can influence. That is the honest limit of preventative maintenance: it shifts the odds substantially in your favour, and it does not eliminate the risk.
